Some paintings are just pure joy to create, and this was absolutely one of them.

While the Kensico Dam area is known for its massive stone architecture, I found myself captivated by this quiet corner at the water's edge. I wanted to capture the contrast between the dark, sturdy weight of the tree trunks and the brilliant, fractured light bouncing off the reservoir behind them.

Painting the way light filters through thick summer foliage is always a fun puzzle. If you look closely at the water, you can see the thick, textured brushstrokes I used to mimic that dazzling, midday shimmer. It’s a little slice of summer peace, tucked away just beyond the trees.

This was painted on-site, plein air. I've included a photo of the location, showing that a photo doesn't paint a thousand words - but a painting does!
